Semi-Homemade Stromboli

It is always good to have a few recipes that you can whip up out of the pantry staples you already have on hand. It’s even better if those recipes also happen to be super simple. And if the recipe happens to be a family favorite that your kids and husband just love?

Well then quite frankly, that’s a recipe you just can’t live without. This delicious stromboli comes together with store bought dough and a few simple ingredients for a no fuss meal.

Here is what you need:

pizza dough (store bought)
1 jar of marinara sauce
1 16oz. package shredded mozzarella
1/4 pound hard Salami
1/4 pound pepperoni
1/4 pound ham, thinly sliced
1 green bell  pepper, thinly sliced
1 small onion, thinly sliced
2-3 tablespoons butter
1 egg
Italian Seasoning

Step 1: Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees F., spray baking pan with cooking spray. Thinly slice green bell pepper and onion and set aside.

Step 2: Melt 2-3 tablespoons of butter in a large pan. saute peppers and onions until soft; drain and set aside.

Step 3: On a lightly floured surface, roll  the dough to a large rectangle, about 10 by 14 inches.

Step 4: Layer salami, pepperoni and ham onto the dough; then add pepper and onion mixture over top evenly. Lastly, sprinkle with shredded mozzarella; being sure to leave a 1 inch boarder around dough.

Step 5: Using a pastry brush; coat the boarder with an egg wash.Starting at the opposite long end, roll up the dough into a cylinder, pinching the edges to seal. Place on the prepared baking sheet and let the dough rise, 20 to 30 minutes.

Step 6: Brush top of stromboli with egg wash then sprinkle with Italian seasoning and bake in preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.

Step 7: Let Stromboli rest 3-5 minutes; then cut into thick slices and serve with a side of warm marinara sauce.

  • Would this freeze well before the baking process? Filling my freezer before baby #5 arrives this summer.

  • Great recipe. Will certainly try it out. Got one question though - can I use puff pastry instead of pizza dough?

    • Puff pastry will not work the same as the pizza dough. It is generally harder to work with.

      • I understand. Thank you for your time and quick answer :)

  • I made this Sunday night. The whole family loved it. I used refrigerated pizza dough. Worked great with it. I think next time I will try it with homemade dough. Thanks for the recipe!

  • Began making my own pizza crust.. super easy.. and the cost was far less than a dollar. A cup of flour costs 15 cents... Hudson Cream from Kansas.. I tossed around the risen dough in a bit of flour.. then pressed onto a cold pizza stone..the toppings determine the total cost of a single pizza... Your stromboli would be wonderful for a working mother (father?) .

  • Looks delicious...can you substitute the green bell pepper (my husband won't eat them)? He doesn't mind red bell pepper - would that work? Thanks for the recipe!

    • Red bell pepper would work just as well in this recipe. :)
