Reptile World Orlando

I hate snakes.

Actually the word ‘hate’ doesn’t even seem strong enough to describe the way I feel about snakes.  Just the thought of them makes me shudder.  I don’t like talking about them, reading about them, looking at pictures of them, or especially seeing them in person.

Unfortunately for me, Maggie has been totally fascinated by snakes for years.  I wasn’t at all surprised when she chose snakes as our first animal to study.  For weeks we read all sorts of books about snakes & other reptiles.  We made snake crafts, painted snake pictures, wrote a snake book, & learned all kinds of neat facts, like that some snakes are born live and others hatch from eggs, and that an anaconda can eat a whole alligator, and that a king cobra is the largest venomous snake.

And this weekend we took a trip to Reptile World, a serpentarium just outside of Orlando.  It was quite a way to go to see some snakes, but we had a really fun day.  I even managed not to shudder or scream or freak out even a little bit, not even they were milking the cobra (crazy!), and not even when Annie insisted on holding a king snake not once but 3 separate times.  She even kissed it.  (Maggie was not quite as enamored.)  Oh the things we do for our kids.

After Reptile World we decided to surprise the girls with dinner at T-Rex, a dinosaur-themed restaurant located at Downtown Disney.  (Hey, dinosaurs were reptiles too–it works! 🙂 )  The restaurant is filled with animatronic dinosaurs which come alive during a meteor shower every 20 minutes or so.

On the way home, safely outside of the crazy Downtown Disney tourist prices, we stopped for ice cream, where the highlight was watching the girls share their cones with one another.  I love that they are the best of friends, love that they can spend all day every day together and not get sick of each other.  It was the perfect end to a very fun–albeit snake-filled–day

  • Considering you are a woman who proclaims to hate snakes (and believe me, I'm right there with you) - there are far too many snake pictures on this post. I'm ashamed to say I haven't actually read the post but skipped straight to the bottom as I'm too freaked out to look. Pathetic, I know, but true.
I thought I would brave the reptile house at the local farm with my daughter the other day, as I don't want her to adopt my fears, but I have to admit I did my best not to look in any cages so that I didn't actually see any thing slithery!
