Hey there, I’m Ruth!

And just like you, I wear a lot of different hats! By day, I’m an author, entrepreneur, blogger, podcaster, product creator, and the CEO of my company, Ruth Soukup Omnimedia.

But I’m also a busy wife and mom to two tween girls, a daughter, sister and friend. I’m a semi-socially-awkward Harry Potter Super Nerd, a wannabe runner, and a big fan of travel hacking, speed-cleaning, wine, and Doritos (Mmmmmm….Doritos….).

And if I’m being brutally honest, I’ll tell you that for much of my adult life, I’ve been kind-of a hot mess. In fact, at this point in my life, I’ve pretty much lost count of all the times I’ve screwed up.

When I was in my early 20’s I went through a terrible depression, attempted suicide several times, and almost didn’t survive. I’ve been divorced. I’ve filed for bankruptcy. I dropped out of college, then later dropped out of law school too. I’ve gotten fired. I’ve trusted people I shouldn’t have, and also let people down who were counting on me. I’ve made bad investments and a whole lot of bad choices. And I love Jesus, but sometimes swear like a sailor.

(I told you I was going to be brutally honest!)

But the one thing I’ve learned in both life and in business is that there are no mistakes, only lessons. And not only that, I’ve learned that all the good stuff comes not despite the struggle, but through the struggle.

How it all began…

I started writing Living Well Spending Less in 2010 as a stay-at-home mom of two toddlers. As a young mom, I was struggling to hold it all together, and I kept thinking that if I could just find a way to get more organized, somehow my life would fall into place. I was sure that the answer to all my problems lie somewhere in the aisles of Target, and so nearly every day I’d load the kids into the car and off we’d go.

Not surprisingly, all that time spent wandering around at Target wasn’t super awesome for my wallet, and soon my husband and I began fighting about money. A lot.

I knew something had to give, and finally, after one make-it-or-break it fight, I was scared enough for the future of my marriage to actually make a change.

To hold myself accountable, I began writing publicly about my journey of trying to live well on a budget. I wrote about the ways I was starting to save money and about figuring out ways to clean more efficiently, get dinner on the table faster, and better manage my time.

Slowly but surely, I began creating simple systems for managing my home, systems that allowed me to spend less time on all that stuff I had to do, so that I could spend more time on the stuff I really wanted to do, like start my own business.

It was a journey that I found many other women related to, and the community here at Living Well Spending Less began to grow.

And now, years later, I have come to some important realizations.

First, I’ve realized that getting a handle on your home life is essential to achieving anything else you want to in life. Whatever your big goals may be, whether it’s starting a business or losing weight or running a marathon or writing a book, it’s hard to focus on those big things when it feels like your home is constantly in chaos.

Taking control of your home systems is the first step in taking control of your life.

Second, and even more importantly, I’ve realized that home systems don’t have to be complicated, nor do they have to be perfect to be effective. In fact, the simpler you can make things for yourself, the better off you’ll be, even if that means cutting a few corners here and there. The goal is not to attain perfection, but to manage your home well enough to free up time for all those other things you really want to do.

If this is your first time visiting, I’d love for you to get to know me better. If you’ve got lots of time, start by reading my depression story, and then read why I took my kids’ toys away or  why I make my bed every day. That will pretty much bring you up to speed with where I’ve been, who I am, and how I tick.

But please don’t think that this site is all about me…
